At the 3rd Inter-Country Certification Committee Meeting -- where policymakers and experts from South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland, the WHO and UNICEF gathered to address issues surrounding polio -- the WHO"s Nicholas Eseko lauded all three countries for becoming and staying polio free, according to BuaNews. He also encouraged them to remain committed to keeping the disease at bay: "Although the number of endemic countries has significantly dropped from 125 to four, some of the previously free countries in our neighbourhood have been re-infected in recent years, therefore posing a very real risk to our children" (Khumalo, 7/27).

American Lung Association Teams With The AAAAI To Award Research Grants To Study Allergic Respiratory Disease

The American Lung Association and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology are partnering to further clinical research to benefit the estimated 40 to 50 million of Americans living with allergic diseases such as asthma. Through the Allergic Respiratory Diseases Award, the American Lung Association and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology will award up to three, two-year research grants valued at $50,000 annually to outstanding investigators. Applications are due on October 21, 2009, and awards will be announced in February of 2010. "We"re pleased to partner with another organization equally dedicated to improving respiratory patient care," said Charles D. Connor, American Lung Association President and CEO. "Together, through our shared strength, we will seek practice-changing scientific innovations by supporting the research community"s best and brightest investigators." All applicants must hold a doctoral degree and faculty appointment in an allergy/immunology division of an academic institution and be undertaking a project related to allergic respiratory disease. Applicants must also have completed a training fellowship and be working in a not-for-profit institution. Applicants may be at any level of research experience.
