Minority Lawmakers Call For 'Aggressive Solutions' To Health Disparities
"Black, Latino and Asian lawmakers want President Barack Obama to focus more on racial disparities reported in medical treatment as the White House works toward overhauling the nation"s health care system," the Associated Press reports. "Members of the Congressional Black Caucus sent Obama a letter last week calling for more attention to minority health problems" and are "expected to join lawmakers from Hispanic and Asian caucuses Tuesday at a news conference on Capitol Hill." They plan to "introduce an alternative health care proposal soon that would improve services in low-income areas, eliminate language barriers and improve data collection to help detect gaps in care for various racial and ethnic groups" (Evans, 6/9).

With Health Reform Uncertain, Maryland Hospitals Consolidate
"Facing difficult economic times and the uncertainties of national health care reform, some Maryland hospitals are choosing to be swallowed up by larger medical systems, with an unusual string of mergers over the past 16 months and more likely on the way," The Baltimore Sun reports. The consolidations could offer benefits to all those involved. Small hospitals gain "the hope of safe harbor from whatever financial storms are on the horizon, hospital chains "get footholds in new areas, where they can build market share and increase the number of patients they serve," and patients may "gain access to large networks of top-notch doctors, even if the patients live many miles from a major medical institution."

Are Imaging Features Of Hepatic Angiomyolipoma Related To Its Clinical Setting?

This study consisted of 10 patients (three male and seven female) with hepatic angiomyolipoma, with a mean age of 55.1 years (age range, 19-78 years). Of these patients, dynamic contrast CT showed hepatic angiomyolipoma as a hypervascular mass with intratumoral fatty density, absence of a capsule, and prominent central vessels in six sporadic cases, and multiple, small hepatic angiomyolipomas, with or without a fat component in four cases with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and multiple hepatic angiomyolipomas were found in one patient with TSC. The results suggest that imaging features of hepatic angiomyolipoma are correlated closely with its clinical setting. Sporadic hepatic angiomyolipoma often presents as a solitary large nodule with a varying fat component. In the setting of TSC, hepatic angiomyolipoma often presents as multiple small nodules, with or without fatty tissue, in the peripheral liver. Dynamic CT features of hepatic angiomyolipoma are very characteristic, and correct diagnosis can be made in combination with clinical features. When coexisting intravascular lesions and hepatic angiomyolipomas are found in patients with TSC, LAM should be considered. Reference: Yang B, Chen WH, Li QY, Xiang JJ, Xu RJ.
