UnitedHealth Group Offers 15 Recommendations To Reduce Federal Health Spending By $540B Over 10 Years
UnitedHealth Group"s Center for Health Reform and Modernization on Wednesday suggested 15 steps that could be taken to save $540 billion in federal in health care costs over the next 10 years, the AP/Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports (Werner, AP/Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 5/27). Simon Stevens, head of the center, said that the report "puts some flesh on the bones" of the pledge made by health care industry groups earlier this month to cut health care costs, noting that the recommendations already are being used by UnitedHealth to reduce costs and can be applied to Medicare (Reuters, 5/27).The recommended steps include:

Boehringer Ingelheim will present new data on the company"s two lead oncology compounds, BIBW 2992* and BIBF 1120** at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the company announced today. Two studies in the LUX-Lung clinical development programme for BIBW 2992 and a Phase II study of BIBF 1120 in ovarian cancer patients will be presented.

CPR Mattress: An Innovation That Can Save Lives

Students from Michigan Technological University have designed and developed a breakthrough in medical care that could save lives in a heartbeat. They devised a mattress that facilitates faster and more effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and they"re working to put it on the open market. The invention addresses a longstanding and critical problem: A standard hospital mattress, with six or more inches of foam, is pliable and cushiony. Pushing down to administer CPR is like pushing on a big sponge the force goes into the mattress and not the body lying on it. A team of Michigan Tech students came up with a simple solution: Push a button, suck the air out of the foam, and make it firm. Some tubing, a little motor, and a vacuum pump work the magic. It takes just ten seconds to work. The measure of their success? With a standard mattress, only 43 percent of the CPR load winds up reaching the heart; with a board underneath the mattress, that rises to 52 percent; and with the Michigan Tech students" design, it leaps to 81 percent. Another team of Michigan Tech students has founded a company and is working to get this mattress into hospitals, especially in emergency rooms. The students expect to have a patent by September 2009.
