Anaphylaxis Canada is responding to the growing public health challenge of keeping teens and young adults with potentially life-threatening food allergies safe by creating a number of interactive tools including a groundbreaking new website, http://www.whyriskit.ca, an online "Reaction Registry" and radio podcasts. These tools are part of a comprehensive new strategy to help allergic youth manage risky situations by reaching out to them in forums in which they are comfortable.

Protesters Disrupt Democrats' Best-Laid Plans For Health Reform 'Conversations'
Over the weekend, a series of protests at Democratic events meant to promote health reform "organized by loose-knit coalition of conservative voters and advocacy groups, were a raucous start to what is expected to be weeks of political and ideological clashes over the health care overhaul," the New York Times reports. "Republicans said that the protests were just the beginning of spontaneous opposition to the health care proposals and that they would only gain momentum as Americans learn more about the legislation." But Democrats said they were only an effort to block discourse, and were anything but a grass-roots campaign. "This is a very coordinated effort," said one Democratic Congressman who was confronted by protestors at a grocery store (Herszenhorn and Stolberg, 8/3).

HIV/AIDS Advocacy Group Calls For Condom Use In Los Angeles County Adult Film Industry; County Response To HIV Cases Questioned

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) on Thursday called on Los Angeles County health officials to require that condoms be used in the adult film industry or shut down production in light of a recent report that a number of people at the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation (AIMHF) clinic have tested positive for HIV since 2004, the Los Angeles Times reports. The group also criticized the county"s response to cases of HIV in the adult industry. Michael Weinstein, president of AHF, said, "L.A. County public health officials have been asleep at the switch with regard to monitoring HIV and STD prevention and testing in the region"s porn industry." Other questions have been raised regarding the county"s role in the notification of partners of those who test positive for HIV, according to the Times (Los Angeles Times, 6/19). Investigators from the state"s Division of Occupational Safety and Health this week conducted a surprise inspection of the AIMHF citing that the clinic has failed to alert local authorities of HIV cases and other sexually transmitted infections diagnosed at the clinic (Elsner, Reuters, 6/18).
