Redefining How A Chronic Auto-Immune Disease Is Diagnosed
New research from Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience (JHN) may redefine how Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) is diagnosed. Eduardo De Sousa, M.D., assistant professor of Neurology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, and director of the Electrodiagnostic Neuromuscular Lab at JHN, led the study which looked at the number of demyelinating features that are needed to differentiate between CIDP, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig"s disease) and diabetic neuropathy. His research suggests a minimum number of three demyelinating features can be used to positively identify CIDP in a patient. CIDP is a neurological disorder characterized by progressive weakness and impaired sensory function in the legs and arms. It affects about 50,000 people in the United States. The study, available in the current edition of the Journal of Clinical Neuromuscular Disease, may help doctors more effectively diagnose and treat CIDP.

Health Canada Approves Innovotech Application For AgressTM Field Testing
The Pest Management Regulatory Agency of Health Canada has granted Innovotech (TSV VENTURE:IOT) a Research Authorization for large-scale field trials for the 2009 season to test its novel seed treatment, AgressTM. This Research Authorization provides growers with an opportunity to assess the real-world ability of AgressTM to fight bacterial disease and its ease of use. In conjunction with cooperating growers, dry beans treated with AgressTM have been planted on farms in Alberta.

Medicaid Health Plans Provide Cost Savings To States And High Quality And Value To Beneficiaries, New Analysis Shows
Medicaid health plans are producing cost savings for states, increasing access to services for individuals covered by Medicaid, improving quality of care, and earning high satisfaction ratings from enrollees, according to a Lewin Group report released today by America"s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP). Twenty-four existing studies were analyzed by the Lewin Group to determine the savings achieved when states have implemented private Medicaid health plans.

NEJM Perspective Pieces Examine Physician Involvement In Health Reform, Congressional Progress On Reform

"Achieving Health Care Reform -- How Physicians Can Help," New England Journal of Medicine: In a perspective piece, Elliott Fisher, a professor of medicine and of community and family medicine at Dartmouth Medical School and associate director for Population Health and Policy at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice; Donald Berwick, a professor at the Harvard University School of Public Health Department of Health Policy and Management and president and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement; and Karen Davis, president of the Commonwealth Fund, call on physicians to "lead the change our country needs" on health reform. They suggest several areas for physicians to become involved, saying that physicians should "first help to create a shared vision that could overcome doctrinal divides" and that they also must "recognize that achieving savings sufficient to cover the cost of expanded coverage need not impose a hardship on patients or providers." Finally, physicians also must help with a health reform deal that "all stakeholders can support," the authors say (Fisher et al., NEJM, 5/21). "Congressional Action on Health Care Reform," NEJM: John Iglehart, national correspondent for NEJM, reviews recent congressional action on health reform. He notes that House lawmakers have pledged to pass a reform measure by July 31, which is similar to a Senate timeline for reform. He discusses provisions that are expected in reform plans being crafted by three House panels and two Senate committees. He also notes that "finding the money to finance reform is the most formidable hurdle facing Democrats," adding, the "GOP will undoubtedly attack [Democrats] for adding untold billions to the mounting federal deficit and leading down a road to socialism" (Iglehart, NEJM, 5/21).
